Host a Play Reading

Thank you for your interest in bringing The Turnaway Play to your community!

Hoping to host a reading at your college or university? We love it! There’s never been a more important time to build understanding of abortion access.

Prefer a book club model? Great! Have a reading of the play with a group of friends and discuss the issues in an intimate setting.

Are you a nonprofit or advocacy organization? Hosting a reading is a great way to bring research to the conversation and empower local storytelling.

Want to host a reading at a local theater? It’s a great way to build theater-community partnerships and engage local theatergoers.

Want to raise money for abortion access? We encourage hosts to designate a local organization to support with the reading.  If you are unsure where to give, here are some ideas from the Turnaway Play team.

Want to involve the researcher or playwright? We can share a recorded Q+A with the Turnaway Play team—and maybe even Zoom into your post-play discussion!

A member of the team will provide you with the script, slides, and other materials. Below is a quick overview of what you’ll need.

The Basics

The play can be performed with four, seven or ten actors. A character breakdown and casting notes will be included.

  • You will need someone to run the slides during the performance.

  • You may want someone to read stage directions, though it’s not necessary.

  • The space requirements of the play are minimal, so anything from a theater to your living room can work. It doesn’t have to be fancy, though fancy can be fun too!

  • Consider a community center or an empty storefront. Does it have free parking? Is it near public transportation? Is the venue accessible for people who need a ramp?

  • The runtime of the play is 70 minutes, so you don’t even need the space for very long. Factor in time for set up and a post-show discussion, and two hours might do the trick.

Note: If you are looking to stage a full theatrical production of The Turnaway Play please contact the playwright directly.

Lots more ideas and instructions can be found in The Turnaway Play Guide.
